The tornadoes or pantographs, legends of suburban transport - the electric units of the 460 series (formerly EM 488.0), which carried passengers for many decades on suburban and regional electrified lines, have finally retired. "Too bad about the tornadoes," someone wrote on one of the retired units in the cemetery. Let's hope not. If only for their moral obsolescence and the fact that in the 21st century their performance should be taken over by low-floor trainsets. The shame perhaps is how long these rigs were in service due to how much the new units replacing them were failing. Last year their 50-year service finally ended and now they're just waiting in the cold for the autogen burners to heat them up.
